In electrical residential applications using gray PVC conduit, in?

I see that you live in the US, so I will answer for the US. In the US the National Electrical Code (NEC) is the applicable code, the 2020 edition being the latest. Rigid PVC conduit is covered in 2020 NEC Article 352. Begin quote: End quote. As stated, Schedule 80 Rigid PVC conduit is required for areas subject to physical damage. Where PVC conduit exits the ground outdoors, it often would be subject to physical damage from lawnmowers, weed wackers, children running into it, etc. If used underground, must be Type A or EB, per the UL Standard for PVC conduit.
